Canada’s top-notch archers are coming to Cambridge, with plans to house a national Olympic recurve training centre at Moyer’s Landing for the next two years.
The centre, which will be the Archery Canada’s first, was announced Thursday, in partnership with the City of Cambridge.
“We have been fortunate to have had great cooperation and partnerships with clubs in Ontario who have worked with the national team program to provide access to their facilities,” remarks Karl Balisch, executive director of Archery Canada, in a news release. “This new partnership with the City of Cambridge allows for our archers and coaches to have exclusive access to a facility that will soon address their needs. It’s an exciting step forward and we look forward to building a strong relationship with the city in the years ahead.”
The search for a national training centre location began in 2020, the news release states, crediting “significant financial support” from the federal government.
City officials proposed the Moyer’s Landing site, it adds, explaining there is a 70-metre target archery range with six target butts. Additionally, the site was chosen because of its location near Highway 401 and proximity to Pearson International Airport, with high-ranking colleges and universities close by.
“Cambridge continues to be a world class destination for sport, and Archery Canada joining us is further proof that we are an excellent city to live, work and play in. We’re thrilled to add Archery Canada to our community,” said Mayor Kathryn McGarry in the release. “We have three major sport infrastructure projects underway, which highlights our commitment to city building and sport tourism.
“Partnering with a national sports organization will only bolster those efforts and help us build on that momentum.”
Archery Canada is the national sport organization responsible for the promotion and development of archery in a safe and ethical manner. The organization supports the achievement of high performance excellence in archery in all categories and the development of a national archery infrastructure to promote archery participation across Canada in cooperation with provincial/territorial associations.
